To answer back its entry for a luxury line of vehicles from Acura (Honda) and Lexus (Toyota), Nissan decided to form “Horizon” Task Force and started to study luxury franchise market opportunity in 1985. Shortly after that, Q 45’s development began and the name “Infiniti” was selected as Nissan new division.
Infiniti was launched in 1989 with 51 dealers to the United States, Canada and Mexico. The carrier models were 1990 performance luxury sedan Q45 and the performance luxury coupe M30 all equipped with top-rated Infiniti parts. The Q 45 was powered by 278 hp (207 kW)4.5 L VH45DE engine and can go from 0-60 in 6.7 seconds.
Several models soon followed during the 90s: the rear wheel drive luxury car J30 in 1992, which replaced the M30; New Infiniti I30 luxury sedan in August of 1994 which is based on the Nissan Maxima sedan; and the first Infinity sport utility vehicle, the QX4 which was introduced in 1997 that was based of the Nissan Pathfinder platform. QX4’s major differences to the pathfinder were its more advanced four wheel drive system and a more upscale interior.
